convert real player videos to windows media player videos?

i like to record videos with my camera and i want to edit them with the windows movie maker but since all the videos that i record automatically come out to be in real player form i cant edit them on movie maker. is there a free good working program that i can use that will covert the videos or any videos to a wmp. file?
