What kind of motion sensor / detector should I use?

For Halloween, every year I'm air-powered "devices" assuming a normal picture cell (one of replacing a light outside) motion sensor. This worked well but was difficult to obtain exactly the way that I wanted, not to mention he was a sheet each time it happened. I thought those garage doors, but the only problem is There should be a cable through concreate road, which would raise some problems. I was also thinking of a new so-called "electronic field disturbance sensors, but nobody sells them (I am not aware as to build one) I have no idea if it will work well. Any help would be greatly appriectiated! Thank you!
